Through the mist

By the time we’ve finished house and garden ‘chores’ the morning sunshine’s vanished, replaced by thick sea mist. Still, this doesn’t stop us visiting our favourite port of call - Churn and Chill - the wonderful artisan ice cream place I’ve previously raved about. I opt for the now iconic dark chocolate and sea salt with spearmint infused stracciatella - absolutely delicious. G opts for the rather less sophisticated ‘birthday cake’ with mini egg stracciatella which he also enjoys. We spend some time chatting with the delightful mother and daughter proprietors who have now reached the difficult stage of a successful small business trying to decide whether to grow or stay as they are. There are no easy solutions.

Our plan today is to explore the Red Rocks nature reserve  - an area of dunes, reed beds and marsh on the western tip of the Wirral peninsula - but with visibility as it is any kind of exploration is limited. Still, the mist makes the area wonderfully atmospheric as we walk along the path between dunes and reef beds. Beyond here is the beach and sea, but both are virtually invisible.  We only know they’re there by the misty apparitions of people walking on the beach, visions increasingly ethereal the further out they are.
