Thursday 18 March 2010: Good night sunshine ...

I never tire of sunsets. To me they are always new and exciting, though I may not express my love of them the way some people do.

Picture it; the South Haven pier, once upon a time, saturday evening right before sunset.

In the last 30 minutes more and more people have gathered at the end of the pier, looking at the setting sun. There are fishermen, young people, old people, tourists, oh and this really awesome couple too! ;)

Mostly everyone is talking, except for the awesome couple who are both holding cameras and shooting away like lunatics.
About 5 minutes before the sun will become invisible the talking dies down, and it gets more quiet and more quiet, until the only thing you hear is the occasional 'click' 'click' from the couple.

Breathless, the group of people stand there and wait for the last ray to sink in the water and then ...
and then ...
they start APPLAUDING!
First two, three people and soon after 98% of the pier was clapping heartily.

(If you are reading this and you were there, or if you have ever applauded a sunset out loud, in public, I must apologize for what I'm about to type:)

It was CRAZY!

I was speechless for the drive home and that doesn't happen often.

So, if you don't want to traumatise innocent bystanders or end up in a Blip, please enjoy your sunsets enthusiastically, but quietly ;)

  3. This looks well deserving of a round of applause. What an amazing way to commune with nature at its most awe-inspiring. Sounds like a really magical experience. Beautiful shot.

The only sunset applause I ever heard was at Uluru, and it was certainly worthy of it too. Of course, all the busloads of tourists were squiffy on the wine that had been babdied about by the tour operators for an hour or so. Me? I moved in as close as I could get and away from the madding crowd, and just watched awestruck!

Hahahahaha - the Table of Delights. I still have aphoto of it before it was devoured somewhere...

  4. Brilliant shot. The silhouettes and that wave in the clouds are beautiful.
I can't understand applauding a sunset either. Were they hoping for an encore?
