Sunday 14 March 2010: Calla Lily
This was captured with my cheapie camera. Nothing similar to last Tuesday's strawberry; I can't begin to explain why. I suppose the lighting, the texture, the nerd behind the camera ;-) but for now after several dozen clicks, I'll settle for this one.
This is the first calla lily (zantedeschia) of the season in our backyard. Another one will soon uncurl. I love the curve of the petal and the blatant-ness of the pistil. They are trumpet-like, so maybe they are the fanfare to announce the arrival of spring.
This plant snuck into our backyard in a pot of succulents given to Mr. Fun by an elderly gardener man years ago. The first time I discovered the lily I was delightfully surprised to see this foreigner who had arrived unannounced. Sometimes the uninvited guests are such a wonder and an honor to behold.
In my adult life the calla lily has become a favorite. But, then, as an adult I have learned to like and to love many things that in my younger days I did not appreciate.
This has been the first day of the "spring ahead" daylight savings time. Waking this morning seemed like being pulled from a faraway place of dreams. I'm not sure what is gained to give the evening more light and the morning more dark. When I was a young mother it meant that my children wanted to stay outside longer; when all I wanted was to have them inside so I knew they were safe.
I hope wherever you are that you are safe; unless of course you are with Aslan and he is not safe (but he is good). Have a great Monday.
Good night from Southern California where the calla lilies are blooming.

I love the softness of the light in this shot, it's beautiful.
And he's not a tame lion, the King of Beasts :)

tIs true, I am a little crazy ;)
It's the Paw Paw river right where it flows into Maple Lake. On the other side is a dam where the lake flows back into the river.

Wow! What a beautiful shot. Thank you for the welcome and kind words!

Thanks!

Very nice! I really like calla lillies too. I carried them in my wedding. They are my girlfriend's very favorite flower, and she made my bouquet for me that day. Thanks for your kind words on my knitting post today. I thought about your comment last night on my fire/dandelion shot. So when I saw the light on my hands, I knew it was the perfect moment. I had envisioned photographing the hats when they were done and atop my little boys' heads. But I liked this one, so I had to post it. Take care and glad the spring is springing in your neck of the woods!

Oh this is beautiful, but it does remind me of a body part - and not a woman's :)
Yes, the blipmeet was fun and it's really a shame that you can't get to the West Coast one. I'm sure that there are going to be others. Who knew that we would be finding real friends through this place? But it's wonderful, isn't it?

I love the light on this one. It seems to glow.

The calla lily is sensual but then so are most flowers I think...and that was part of the beauty of Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party. This is a lovely close up Carol and you are not a nerd behind the lens ---I love this :)

I love how you appreciate all of the flowers in your yard so much. Carol, you definitely take the time to smell the flowers and that's what I like about you!!!!

Can I pull a "Katherine Hepburn" and say "Ah, the calla lilies are in bloom "agane' " (thats again in K.H. language) Lovely picture! We will miss you at the blipmeet (unless that fare comes along) However, next time I go to Ca. to pick up momsrachel, I'm going to see about a blipmeet there!

Carol: I have very special memories of callas. A calla always reminds me of me rowing with my grandmother on a small lake where my grandparents had their summer cottage. I remember us rowing in the summer evenings and we were adoring the callas growing on the shores. Beautiful close-up of the calla lily!

I though White Lilies were for funerals, well they are over here.
Nice textures on here.

Carol---I know who frustrating trying to book those free ones on SW are---invariably one end it a great price or free and the other end sucks price wise. I usually end up going nuts trying all over to find good rates when we go anywhere--which isn't all that often! I will especially miss meeting you if it doesn't work out because you seem to be such a kind and loving person on blip. I am eager to meet you SOME day that is for sure. Do know you will definitely be there in spirit I know and that you are not forgotten ---we will have to do a special toast at any rate to you and Mr. Fun. We must continue t plan more of these and one down on your end of the map---it'd be great fun to travel down someday and take a dip in your pool haha. Thinking of you and hoping a seat opens for the return!!! xoxoClare
