Wednesday 30 January 2008 : Goodbye For Now
Well, I've had pleanty of fun taking pictures at home in Canada. Tomorrow at 7pm I will be in the air Heading from Toronto Canada, to Chennai India.
For those of you who haven't read from previous blips of mine, I am travelling to India as a volunteer with a Habitat for Humanity team to build houses there. I will be in the South, staying in Chennai for a couple of nights, then we'll be going further down to Pondicherry. The build will be in that area. I will also be meeting my sponsor child, Selvi, who my mother and I have been sponsoring for 7 years. I will get to see her village and her class room. I'm so excited about this part! I have received donations of stickers, pencils, sharpeners, and erasers. I've bought a few jars of playdough as well. I know the kids will love them!
I will be gone from the 31st of January until the 19th of February. I've been planning this trip for about 6 months, and I can hardly believe I leave tomorrow... I'm so excited, and nervous. I feel like I know what I should be expecting to see, but I know it will all take me by surprise anyway. Wish me luck everyone! <3

How does habitat for Humanity pick the people to live in the houses that they build?

To answer that, I'll tell you how the financial structure of getting a house works first.
A Habitat for Humanity house has an interest free mortgage, and as the home owner pays it off, that money then goes into building more homes. This alone can keep things fairly stable, but partnered with donations and volunteer work, the program grows exponentially. More houses are built, and more families find shelter. World wide.
To be elegible, you must display an appropriate financial need. Also, you must put in a minimum of 500 hours sweat equity on either your home, or another HFH home. What this means, is that you need to participate in the building of the homes.
So far, in India alone, there have been over 10,000 homes built. World wide there have been a staggering 200,000 homes built! The numbers keep growing thanks to volunteers, donors, and families that help with building and pay their mortgages. It's a very stable organization, and is having a significant impact on reversing poverty the world over.

The hardest thing about going through my photos now for blip is that I forgot to change the time when I was in India! So I'm having to think out the time conversion in my head to make sure it's the right day. :oS

If I had the dates right, I would have posted right away. I got so busy, and I was taking pictures every day still. But because the images from the trip were all mixed up date wise, I was putting off the large chore of posting them and all of the other photos I had taken since. That large chore grew with every day as more and more pictures went onto my camera.
Then, just the other day, I accidentally formatted one of my cards. I hadn't transferred the blips over, and about 25 days were lost right there.
I was so into blip, and I still would be. But I just feel like back blipping this far would be too much for me right now. So I've stopped taking a picture every day for a while. I may continue in the future when my life smooths into a steady rhythm.
Now, for all of you who still want to see some of India, all is not lost!!
I have here a youtube of some videos I compiled. Here is a link to the first one:

You can find the rest under my user name there or in the side bar that shows related videos. I hope you enjoy, and I shall return someday, to start my blips again.

Oh! I have been waiting for your return! I am glad you are back, but I had no idea you put this comment on here - could have been months ago :(. How heart breaking it must have been for you to loose those pictures :( I would have cried, I think!
hey - don't wait to be able to put all your pictures online! You don't have to do them all in order. Just get started today with today's pictures. One day, maybe, you might back blip some from your trip. You don't have to give up blip just because you have an overwhelming job to get the dates right on old pics. We'd love to see you back in action again.
One last thing - and you probably already know this, but depending on the software you use to manage your pictures you should be able to select them all and use one command to do a timezone shift on the entire batch and they'll all be fixed in one command! I've done this before (hmm, just about after every trip!).
Oh - one last, last thing :) - I liked your youtube videos :)
