Saturday 13 March 2010: View from Library
Another weekend in the library working on my dissertation. I had hoped to hear from my advisor on my latest draft, but he's been MIA for two weeks now. I only heard today that apparently some ongoing drama in the program has hit the fan.
For months now they have been negotiating a split with one school for another (something to do with 3 million Euros in funding that came in about a year ago). There were rumors that my advisor, also the program director, and this hurricane of a woman who secured the initial funding had fallen out. Apparently, each laid claim to individuals, money, and students - like a bad divorce proceeding. There were rumors of terminal illness among key staff, and I've had to check what office my advisor is in each time I visit him.
Apparently, hurricane woman ran off with her 'terminally ill' partner in crime (whose apparently not ill at all) and there's rumors that the students are staging a protest since the program has ground to an exhilaratingly dramatic halt. No one has received any marks since before finals last term and the courses are all out of whack since some of the professors up and left with the hurricane.
It's as dramatic as academia gets.
