Saturday 11 February 2012: Pannanich Hill
from Cambus o'May woods. A bright morning deteriorated into a dull but very mild afternoon, so this doesn't look great. Pannanich [pron. pannok] Hill across the valley is the source of the prized mineral water from which Ballater developed originally as a small spa town. The building half way up the hill is Pannanich Wells (one time hotel) and next to it is the tiny bottling plant from which "Deeside Water" is now distributed to retailers all over the country.
An interesting anomally is that a couple of years ago Aboyne Co-op (10 miles down the valley) were selling 2Ltr bottles @ 97p. We came across exactly the same bottles in Falmouth about 700 miles away @ 59p!! We mentioned this to our Co-op and they said they would "look into it". They must still be looking it's now over £1 per 2Ltrs...
Anyway we had a very pleasant 1.5 hour walk up through the woods and didn't meet another soul. Much warmer up here than down south I gather - and snowing in Rome!
