On 29th february 1972 at about 1am I gave birth to a male child. It was a clear night with a full moon. The birth took place in an old shepherds cottage 1000 feet up in the Lowther Hills, about 5 miles from the highest village in Scotland. The room had a concrete floor, a Rayburn, a chair and a scrubbed pine table. I was lying on the table. There were no curtains or shutters. The moon shone through the window. There were three people present at the birth. Two of them are now dead and the whereabouts of the third is unknown. After the birth the baby was wrapped, unwashed, in a clean towel and placed on the table with me, and the three other people went back to bed.
