Wednesday 23 May 2012: Buzzin' with excitement

I noticed there were few bees about this morning. And by lunchtime a whole flight/grist/hive/swarm had arrived on next door's wall. They'd found a hole and seemed to be preparing for the Queen's arrival - a bit early for the Jubilee celebrations, I thought.

By mid afternoon we were worried as the air was thick with thousands of them. I telephoned the local Bee Keeping Association who said to leave them alone and if they hadn't flown off in a few days, they'd come round and exterminate them. Well, we didn't think that was too agreeable. But our neighbours were worried they'd get into the bedroom on the other side of the wall.

A local bee-keeper finally came round at tea-time, just as they'd all gone into the hole in the wall for a nap, and put a hive on the ground below. We're now watching intently so see if they decide to move house again in the morning. We'll let you know ...
