This week in Blipfoto - Steve McCurry
28th October 2011
Steve McCurry is one of the best known image makers on the planet. If you don't know his name, you'll know his pictures... Many have become modern icons.
And this is your chance to interview him.
Steve has agreed to answer questions from the Blipfoto community. So, now we need your questions. Add yours to the comment board below and we will chose ten of the best to send to Steve.
Of course, you will know his images, but here is just a little bit more about the man to fuel your thoughts.
He launched his career with a covert mission, entering into rebel-controlled Afghanistan just before the Russian invasion, disguised in native costume. The images that he captured - smuggled out of the war-torn country by sewing rolls of film into his clothes - would be published around the world and were among the first to highlight the conflict.
His coverage won the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, an award dedicated to photographers exhibiting exceptional courage and enterprise.
He is also the recipient of numerous awards, including Magazine Photographer of the Year as well as an unprecedented four first prizes in one year at the World Press Photo Contest. He has also won the Olivier Rebbot Memorial Award twice.
McCurry's work has been featured in every major magazine in the world and frequently appears in National Geographic magazine.
A high point in his career was the rediscovery of the previously unidentified Afghan refugee girl that many have described as the most recognizable photograph in the world today.
A truly inspirational photographer - so let's hope that we can muster some inspirational questions to send to him.
With the iconic work of Steve McCurry in mind, there was pressure on us this week for our Staff Picks.
I think that you guys pulled it off though.
See what you think?
Staff Picks
This shot shows that there are plenty more shrimps in the sea... Shrimp fishing in the Dutch island of Terschelling. No wastage, as the shrimps are filtered and the small ones go back in the water.
The yellow fields of Oudsthoorn, South Africa provide a stunning contrast to the blue skies and the dark, distant mountains.
"Even if the sky was falling down, Layla the dog wouldn't budge," says Australian Blipper ... "not unless there was a nice tasty lamb shank on offer!" The sky is certainly oppressive in this shot. Not that Layla's noticed.
The assignment for Boston-based blipper On A Good Day, was "to stop motion". We shared this snap on Facebook already, but loved the shot so much, had to put it in our Staff Picks.
Another sportsman jumping out the top of the shot... This time in Australia. A good track, smaller numbers, great weather, a dry and fast run... a perfect day to catch a Blip. And a great day at Rydal for round 6 of the SRAM single track series.
Some people take their reading very seriously indeed. And for serious reading, you need a serious reading lamp. The newly-reopened National Museum of Scotland is the location.
Thailand has been devastated by floods, with water creeping further into the capital, Bangkok. Even the mighty Samsung has been hit. There might not be any floods in Koh Chang, but this view reminds blipper Lost Abroad of the situation close by.
A spontaneous trip to "Thor's Well" near Yachats (Oregon) gave Blipper pddesigns the perfect Sunset snap. Mist, spray and orange tones...
