This week in Blipfoto - prizes galore

4th November 2011

At last, we have a winner. We found ourselves in a tie-break situation to decide the winning shot for the Momentum competition. So, the judges from Channel 4 reconvened to argue their cases and decide, once and for all, on the winning photo.

(Remind yourself of the contenders again.)

The fancy, new Olympus cameras have been given one last polish and are now ready to send to the winners - who we will reveal on Monday.

Talking of competitions, we have an interesting little challenge kicking off on the Nature & Wildlife Group at present.

Earlier this week, Blipfoto caught up with Richard Sucksmith, recently crowned winner of this year's British Wildlife Photography Award (BWPA).

The guys at the BWPA were kind enough to give us a copy of this year's glossy, hardback book as a prize.

The challenge? Photograph any animal, bird or insect that you have never Blipped before and share it with us on Blip. Remember to tag the picture BWPA to be included.

The pictures will then be judged by the team at the British Wildlife Photography Awards.

So, keep your eyes peeled, and your shutter finger twitching.

Staff Picks

This week's Staff Picks compile a set of very different pictures, captured in very different places telling very different stories. We hope that you enjoy them.

Going home always comes with a mixture of emotions. Excitement or sorrow? Happiness or regret? This shot from Finnish Blipper aksalmi captures the reflections of the journey home perfectly.

The umbrellas hanging in this old walled town outside Lisbon are actually for sale. But we like the idea that they might actually have a more benevolent and practical use too, guarding passing pedestrians from the sun/rain...

A picture speaks a thousand words, but on first glance this picture perhaps only says four. What. You. Looking. At? But, if you look closer, the other 996 words are definitely visible.

Early morning, frost overnight and a glorious sunrise always makes for a lovely picture. Especially in Saltspring Island, Canada.

A Sunday atmosphere down at Copacabana during the Dia de los Muertos public holiday, when locals and visitors alike pay respect to the dead, clean up gravestones and leave flowers. The front of Copacabana and Ipanema closed to traffic and a definite feel of summer arriving in Rio.

A suburban view from Minnesota - straight across the top of Fitger's Brewery to Lake Superior. The hue of the sky and the sea contrasting with the sharp red of the water tower.

A strange couple. Sitting and chatting while they roast corn. The lady is in the process of picking off pieces of corn for her tiny dog (look closely) on her lap.
