This Week in Blipfoto - Moving, with style
20th January 2012
As in many things that Blip does, we have been the victim of our own success... Due to a fantastic opportunity that has been presented to us for the launch of The World Over film, the date for its premier has been shifted. Slightly.
While, of course, this means that (unfortunately) you won't be tucking into your haggis, neeps and tatties while you watch the films premier, it does ensure that a huge, international audience will be present to see the film that you play a starring role in.
The change in date will allow the film to be premiered at the fantastic Celtic Connections festival - an international celebration of musical culture and heritage.
But it will be much more than that - it will go down as part of history too. (But we'll tell you about this another time.)
It also means that we will now be able to accept submissions for The World Over right up to Burns Night, on the 25th of January (allowing both St Andrews Day and Burns Night to be featured in the film).
But who knows, though, you may just get a sneak preview on Blip first... Shhhh! Watch this space.
Nature and Wildlife
At the end of last year we set a challenge via the Nature & Wildlife group - for the chance to win a copy of the glossy, hardback British Wildlife Photography Awards annual, we asked Blippers to post a photograph of an animal, bird or insect that they had never Blipped before.
After much deliberation we plumped for this winning shot from Arizona (US) of a great horned owl in flight.
The raptor's strength, stealth and omniscient eyes were captured brilliantly by Blipper Kathee.
The book is now, erm, winging its way to her.
There's certainly plenty of inspiration in there for future wildlife shots... However, if you're not lucky enough to have won a copy of this coffee table tome, and you're looking for inspiration, there is a Monthly Challenge currently running on the Nature & Wildlife group page. The January Challenge is "Wings" (tag "wings2012"). February will be "Camoflauge"...
SpringNTS
Blipfoto's collaboration with the National Theatre of Scotland kicked off with the chance to have your picture featured on the cover of this year's prestigious NTS brochure.
For that, and the opportunity to win prizes that money-can't-buy - including exclusive access behind the scenes at the Theatre and signed art-work, enter new or existing blips to the competition by adding the tag "SpringNTS" to any shots that you think meet the brief "One Day In Spring"... And you could become a cover star!
Staff Picks
A South Atlantic Silhouette - Miles off the coast of Brazil, it is always wise to check that the fresh memory card you intend on using is in your camera and not sitting on your desk in the bowels of the ship before being lowered in the sea in a "Man Overboard Boat" to start a photoshoot... A good professional tip, but the resulting shots were pretty stunning nonetheless...
Some people are very alone. But there are two kinds of loneliness. The loneliness that strikes fear in our heart. Or solitude and escapism - the time to do your own thing and marvel in your surroundings. This is the latter.
The solo Tango as performed on the barrios of San Telmo , Sao Paulo. The easy rhythm and well worn steps. The exquisite style and Latin charm. Cool despite the heat. Very cool, indeed.
In Mid January the whole of India celebrated the festival of Makar Sankranti - the day when the Sun transits into Makar Rashi (Capricorn) - drawing Rangolies, flying kites and preparing a traditional dish called Pithe. This child is seen in the make-up of Lord Hanuman (the mighty monkey deity), during the celebration at Shilparamam, Hyderabad.
