Cabbagetree Cottage

Thursday 2 September 2010: Lichen 4

I cannot find a name for this one. It is common in places with a high rainfall, but so rare here that this is the only specimen I have found in my garden. It is growing in a place where birds like to perch and I brushed away a considerable amount of poo before taking the photo. Found on the top rail of a south-facing fence.

Best in large.

  2. very pretty indeed and it is so different from the rest of them.

    ~ zahrashah

  3. What a find! It's another one that has a similar form to something one might find growing on a coral reef.

It reminds me in colour and shape of one that I've seen quite commonly in ancient woods here - but that one has a trailing habit, almost as if dripping from the branches, rather than upright like this one.

I hope that it's only a matter of time before one of us finds a lichen-spotters guide on the www!

  4. This is beautiful, lovely white colour, looks if it should be under the water. Infact the remaining image has some great textures & moss etc on it which looks great.

    ~ rainie

  5. Beautiful capture, love the endless white/silvery grey branches like veins or does it look like a wig or in the sea - so many places it could belong but your south fence seems to be the best place :)

    ~ flying

  6. It looks like a pompom landed!

PS Brushing away poo for a blip shows a high level of dedication. I'm in awe! :o)

  9. We have LOADS of that stuff, all over the shop (high rain fall you say? Hmmm, why doesn't that surprise me?).

    ~ CanCarrier

  10. Wow - doesn't look like lichen - a pompom or a fascinator perhaps - and as for poo brushing - that is dedication!

  13. I'm seeing a light green color on my screen--not white. It's so unusual and does look like something seen underwater doing a dance of joy . It's lovely.

    ~ Amalari

  27. another very pretty lichen. but i must ask and now show my ignorance totally...sigh. what exactly is lichen? is it a flower of sorts? i don't know that we have it here in america...maybe, maybe just not where i live but i've never heard of it 'til now and you putting up these pics.

  30. I love your lichen series. This one is beautiful and the colors are just fantastic. Very sharp where it needs to be as well.

Thanks for your kind comments on my 200th blip. I enjoy your journal and will be checking in on you more than you know. I was so flattered to read that mine is one of your "favorites." That means a lot to me. Yours is also one of my favorites.
