Thursday 2 September 2010: Lichen 4
I cannot find a name for this one. It is common in places with a high rainfall, but so rare here that this is the only specimen I have found in my garden. It is growing in a place where birds like to perch and I brushed away a considerable amount of poo before taking the photo. Found on the top rail of a south-facing fence.
Best in large.

Very lovely, such texture and colours.
~ ju4bluz

very pretty indeed and it is so different from the rest of them.

What a find! It's another one that has a similar form to something one might find growing on a coral reef.
It reminds me in colour and shape of one that I've seen quite commonly in ancient woods here - but that one has a trailing habit, almost as if dripping from the branches, rather than upright like this one.
I hope that it's only a matter of time before one of us finds a lichen-spotters guide on the www!

This is beautiful, lovely white colour, looks if it should be under the water. Infact the remaining image has some great textures & moss etc on it which looks great.

Beautiful capture, love the endless white/silvery grey branches like veins or does it look like a wig or in the sea - so many places it could belong but your south fence seems to be the best place :)
~ flying
It looks like a pompom landed!
PS Brushing away poo for a blip shows a high level of dedication. I'm in awe! :o)
~ horrigans

Another unusual and lovely capture!

That is a very nice piece of lichen - such wonderful shape - looks like a piece of coral.
~ pcc
We have LOADS of that stuff, all over the shop (high rain fall you say? Hmmm, why doesn't that surprise me?).
~ CanCarrier

Wow - doesn't look like lichen - a pompom or a fascinator perhaps - and as for poo brushing - that is dedication!

What a beautiful shot. Such delicacy and lovely colour in the Lichen
~ maxellis

I'm seeing a light green color on my screen--not white. It's so unusual and does look like something seen underwater doing a dance of joy . It's lovely.

Wonderful group of plants, aren't they? No wonder people get quite passionate about them. You will be an expert by the end! Love all the subtle colours in this picture.
~ sheilwill
looks like something you just find in movies. love it
~ visualbinam

Beautiful! You have such a variety around your area and they are so unique in color and form.
~ loneygirl

It's beautiful and I've never seen anything like it! Love the muted colours.

Nice, well spotted.
(Could it be letharia vulpina?)
~ spodzone
Great find! It looks so alive (but of course, it is :)
~ ionnature
It's interesting how underwaterish the lichen can appear - great textures and colours

Another beautiful lichen, and another one that looks like an underwater plant. Lovely!
~ chaiselongue

It looks like stag horn lichen to me, some times called wolf lichen. It's one of the few I know about.
~ Amalari

another very pretty lichen. but i must ask and now show my ignorance totally...sigh. what exactly is lichen? is it a flower of sorts? i don't know that we have it here in america...maybe, maybe just not where i live but i've never heard of it 'til now and you putting up these pics.
~ simplemoments
Lovely lichen if not quite as exotic as your previous ones!
~ Jeanneb53

I'm not sure what this one is, but it is rather lovely...and again good to see the interest this series is generating.
~ gladders

I love your lichen series. This one is beautiful and the colors are just fantastic. Very sharp where it needs to be as well.
Thanks for your kind comments on my 200th blip. I enjoy your journal and will be checking in on you more than you know. I was so flattered to read that mine is one of your "favorites." That means a lot to me. Yours is also one of my favorites.
~ pondosakate

Yet another fine capture of a fascinating subject. I have never seen anything quite like these lichens before. Keep 'em coming!
