Sunday 30 August 2009: Shark Attack!!!

<back blip>

I've blipped a shark (dogfish) before, with a much better image than this one. But this image has a much better story...

I was diving near Skye, and the surface layer of the water was cold rainwater stained a deep brown colour with peat - you couldn't see a thing. Once we got down to about 5m the water was very clear, but it was very dark due to all the crud in the surface layers.

In the beam of my torch I caught some movement a few metres in front of me and followed it with my torch. I saw it was a dogfish so I thought I'd try for a photo - you don't see them that often. As the dogfish cruised across my line of sight I struggled to get it to focus, then, just as it focus locked, the dogfish turned in towards me... AND ATTACKED!!!

Yes, in a plainly predatory move it lunged at me and I was forced to fend it off with my camera, which it head-butted pretty darned hard. When I say I "fended it off" I think it would me more reasonable to say I was paralysed with fear and it swam into my camera. I was as surprised as anyone to discover I had this photo!!! I then proceded to leap back about three feet (no mean feat underwater) while my buddy almost died laughing...

Fortunately the shark (dogfish) then departed a speed, leaving me to collect my dignity and carry on with the dive...

After the dive with sight of dolphins playing under the bow of the boat as we went back to the slipway.

Otters, wrecks, dolphins and a shark attack. Just another weekend diving in Scotland folks.

  2. I've seen what they have in their intestines often enough to not laugh too much at your adventure. Your nose would fit in it's mouth o,k. ;0)

  3. Yikes! I would have been paralysed with fear as well!
