Tuesday 27 July 2010: diptych

Seeing as today is my 100th, I decided to do something special - and I figured a diptych was in order.

In Mu'iz Street with Scorpionkiss, we stood in front of this beautiful building. It looks somewhat out of place surrounded by the Fatimid mosques, and yet fits right in.

It seems that when I am in this street, I become fixated on watching people and how they walk. Like this man. And this boy. And today was no exception...

Your blip is very atmospheric but despite the main subjects taking centre stage my eyes are drawn to the young man in the background who looks as if he is in some kind of torment of discomfort.

  16. Congratulations habibti, it's just an amazing Diptych, and perfect on your 100th!!The two scenes are startling together, the man on the left looking directly at you and the bottom of his galabaya flowing, and the young man to the right, maybe a madrassa student, and the boy in the red shirt on the cell phone...all of seemingly in the same plane, but in different points of time...Beautifully accomplished today habibti, and very very special!!!xxxxxx

    ~ maxellis

  61. Congratulations on reaching 100. I always look at your journal but don't often comment. I love the light in this and the lines are like an embrace. It seems to me you were quite tentative with your fitrst few blips and then have taken off running, going from strength to strength. It is a delight to see you and SK's takes on the same, or similar, locales. I look forward to many more.

Also wanted to ask if I'd understood rightly your connection to Lesotho? At university I shared a house with a delighful friend called Nolo (for Lechlahanalo) and I do wonder what became of him as we lost touch after he returned to his homeland. I'm quite sure it was he who first bit me with the Africa bug.

    ~ grace

  62. Many congratulations. I'm really looking forward to your next 100.

    ~ gblrps

  63. This picture is simply amazing! I like your choice of "splitting" it in two parts and the effect that you get is beautiful! You have a great talent, lots of creativity and technique!
I'll be repeating myself, but I truly love your photography and your "eye"!

    ~ lukeit

  64. Wonderful image - the colouring is sublime. Congratulations on your first 100 beautiful blips!

    ~ yogini08

  65. Superb, simply. Congrats with the 100th too!

    ~ wolfjournal

  66. The continuity is so good in this diptych, it looks like one image flowing into another. The light infuses everything with poetry. A favourite.

Many congratulations on 100. Your journal is a joy to follow. Meg

    ~ megatonlove

  67. sitting here, on another side of the world, just feeling at home.

you make cairo seem familiar. friendly. full of warmth and life and humanity.

i like how this split image makes the building seem rounded. As if the two belong together as a whole. and then they are in a way. the two belong together whether they are the same or two different places.

the three men. three different places in the picture. so well placed. and so well chosen.

and that man i the foreground. his flowing white garments. so pictorially pleasing. and so telling about place.

everything seems planned and incidental at the same time.

    happy 100th!
Following your journal has been a true pleasure!
i missed your visual poetry when away, if only for a few days.......

    - grete

    ~ meandmax

  68. Congrats on the 100th. Awesome blip!
