Tuesday 1 March 2011: Personal effect

On 19th July 1545, an English sailor lost this comb.

He also, along with all his shipmates, lost his life when the Mary Rose sank in the Solent.

Perfectly preserved after hundreds of years in silt, the comb still has the Tudor sailor's nits in its teeth.

Remarkable, getting this close to something so old - which looks like it could have been made yesterday. A day full of all kinds of treasure.
