Traces of Past Empires

Medieval Stained Glass from St Andrew's Church Nor

Pushing the definition a bit here - I suppose it could be the Empire of the Medieval Roman Church - but it's such a strong image.

Here we see Death dancing with a Bishop, indicating that all are equal before God and death comes to all. This when the Plague was endemic in medieval England and returned after intervals. It could be escaped by the rich by fleeing to their estates in the County of Norfolk, but for the rest the crowded insanitary City with its many rats and their fleas meant death was always lurking behind them.

St Andrew's was built in one campaign from 1470s to the early 1500's on the site of earlier churches.

My father was Churchwarden of St Andrew's Norwich for many years.
