Thursday 3 March 2011: To Paint the Lily
"Therefore, to be possess'd with double pomp,
To guard a title that was rich before,
To gild refined gold, to paint the lily,
To throw a perfume on the violet,
To smooth the ice, or add another hue
Unto the rainbow, or with taper-light
To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish,
Is wasteful and ridiculous excess."
- Shakespeare (Salisbury, King John)
Or for another take:
"To gild refined gold, to paint the lily,
To throw a perfume on the violet,
... is just f'n silly"
- Tim Minchin
Anyway ... I had a photo this morning of a sliver of a crescent Moon, Venus high above it, and a little bird hunched up in the cool morning air on a branch of the Gum in our backyard. But when we got home my wife pointed out this beautiful pink Lily that had just bloomed in our front garden - and it had to be the shot for the day.
This is unaltered, just as it came out of the camera, and is a good representation of how it looks. 8)
