Roman Fort Wall - Londinium

This is the Roman City Wall of London - or rather the Wall of the Fort situated in the North West of the Roman Londinium.

This was revealed after German air raids in 1940 destroyed the area, excavated in the 1960s, the area is displayed rather well with panels explaining the layout and excellent reconstructions of what the wall looked like. One of them is even see-through, so you can match the towers and wall on the glass to the ruins behind.

The Fort is the size of a normal auxiliary fort, but would not have held a single unit. Rather it would have held soldiers seconded from units across the Roman Province of Britannia Inferior to serve the governor. We may speculate that they were bodyguards, couriers, clerks to compile strength returns and military planners.
