Tuesday 8 March 2011: Japonica - Japanese quince

A very busy shift at the Chinese gardens with little time to spend taking photos.

Over the past weeks I have been watching a row of japonica - trimming the carpark - bear their floral tributes on naked branches, throw buds of green leaves and now the fruit is beginning to show.

A bit of research about this plant has me making plans to pick the fruit when ripe and use to make apple and quince preserve or crumble or jelly .....maybe.

Love the spotty blush and the exotic look of this fruit. Looks nothing like the quince I am used to.

The red flowers in the background are carpet roses.
