Wednesday 9 March 2011: The rate of change
It's easy to forget just how quickly the world has changed
When S1's father left England as a teenager, bound for New Zealand,
he did so on a ship
Stopping at every port. Sailing for weeks on end.
When they finally arrived, they sent a telegraph back to family in the UK.
One generation on.
His lovely daughter, my amazing wife,
lives, by chance, less than 3 miles from where he grew up.
In stark contrast to her fathers adventure,
she arrived overnight on a plane from New Zealand
and still has constant contact with 'home'
The phone goes 3 or 4 times a week with calls from home
not to mention the emails and text messages
This sure is a wondrous world we live in
and it's getting smaller every day.
