Thursday 10 March 2011: Teach them young
In a country where almost every day is a sunny day, and the swimming season lasts for almost 5 - 6 months, it is wise to teach the youngsters to be able to swim at an early age.
Unfortunately there are tragic drownings every year. This is mostly caused when swimming pool areas are not secure and safe, and when children are left to swim unsupervised.
This image shows Mommy Cecile and babyCecile , 5 months old, going through the paces of making her waterwise.
Still very small, there is good reason in starting at a young age, simply to get them used to water.
Part of the exercise program is dipping the entire baby underneath the water surface for a moment, helping the little legs to do some kicking, and stretching the arms towards a floating toy.
Tiny steps, but eventually it will pay off.
On a sad note: the body of the painter, Cornelius Bosch had been found and positively identified. He had been shot and burnt beyond recognition. His vehicle and cell phone are still missing.
We are angry and upset that this has become part of our lives in our beautiful country.
