The weight of this sad time we must obey

Last night I drove to Glasgow to see Derek Jacobi as King Lear, a play about madness and cruelty. There are so many deaths at the end of the play that it seems to push at the limits of credulity, even for a historical tragedy.

This morning I heard on the news about Colonel Gaddafi's continuing assault with heavy weapons on his own people, and I though, maybe Shakespeare didn't get it so wrong. Madness and cruelty indeed.
