Friday 11 March 2011: Tsunami warning

Last night I was up late when I saw a tweet come through Twitter about the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. We no long have cable TV so I watched online live as it was happening. My heart sank when I saw those huge waves coming over the land, the fires and destruction.

I knew last night when I went to bed that we would probably hear the tsunami sirens go off. But hubby and I slept right through them. We live close enough to the bay that we hear the ocean's roar, so I was surprised I didn't hear them. In the morning, we watched the news carefully to see if there were evacuations. The local schools decided to close and some businesses also closed. The college I work at did not close so I went in to work.

It was so hard to focus on work when we were awaiting news. I received calls, tweets, and SMS from friends and family members wanting to know if we were alright here. Though we came out fine here, there were damages further south in Brookings, Port Orford and into California in Crescent City.

Hubby and I went out to Sunset Bay to catch the sunset this evening. Everything was fairly calm and we were blessed with a gorgeous sunset. Here's some additional photos I posted to Flickr.

My hubby did a time lapse video of the sunset. You will see me on the beach taking photos. I thought the sunset was over and I went back to the car when the sky turned the brilliant color you see, so I went back out to capture it. Later at home, we heard that we really should not have been out there as there was another surge.

My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the people of Japan.
