Tuesday 22 March 2011: close
There are attractive closes in Edinburgh that reek of history and offer a glimpse of days of yore. They have been largely sanitised for their consumption by the masses.
In some corners of the city, however, the burghers offer at least a partial reconstruction of what the small enclosures between the tenements actually might have been like during the middle ages.
They stink of piss but offer rudimentary shelter for those not overly fussy about their accommodation.
One olfactory system was harmed, possibly irreparably, during the taking of this picture.
