Saturday 9 February 2008: Hegu and Yang Xi and me

So among my various chronic health problems, I inherited neurologic migraine with aura from my mother. I estimate I've had over 2,000 migraines since I was 12. When I was in my early 20s I finally sought treatment for them and its been a long road of drugs that don't work, drugs that make them worse, drugs with side effects worse than the migraines themselves. For the past 10 years I've had very good abortive meds that stop them when they start, but as of yet I've been unable to find a daily med to prevent them without hellish side effects.

So I'm trying acupuncture and controlling my diet to try and lessen them and the number of abortive meds I need monthly. The jury is still out. But I came into acupuncture this morning after having a migraine on and off for three days which I could not seem to get rid of. A round of acupuncture and my remaining symptoms disappeared.

This is a self portrait of sorts, magnets applied to the 4th and 5th acupuncture point of the large intestine meridien.... Hegu and Yang Xi... on my hand... traditional chinese medicine says stimulation of these points lessens headache. As a scientist I'm still skeptical, but if the mojo works, I'll take it.
