Bluebells

Voices

Cows moo: that's nothing new;
Horses say, 'Neigh!'
Dogs woof; cats mew;
But what do flowers say?

'Boing!' trills the daffodil,
Calling in the spring;
'Ding dong, ding dong,'
The bluebells sing.

'Crack!' cries the snapdragon;
'Sniff!' goes the rose;
'Me, me, me!' forget-me-nots
Are whispering at your toes.

But, in the autumn showers,
Before the flowers die,
If you listen carefully
You'll hear their petals sigh.

(Actually wrote this poem years ago, but it seemed to go well with these incredibly early bluebells that are growing in a sheltered spot, beside our front door.)
