Falaisg

Falaisg is the Gaelic for "muir-burn" - the burning of heather or other vegetation to encourage new growth of grass. It is covered by a legislation and a Code of Practice and must (usually) be finished by April 15th. The weather in the last ten days has been too wet for any burning but this afternoon I noticed a big burn taking place on the west side of Glendaruel, and a much smaller one on the hill next to our house. I blipped a picture from one of them, but this had to replace it, because four hours later the small one is blazing out across the entire hillside. The smell of burning gorse and heather is very strong. and bits of soot are landing on top of our cars , parked at our back door. We have been out along the drive to look at it and will go to bed a little nervous about how close it is coming, as we do most years. We will probably get up to check its progress. periodically. But it has to be admitted that a falaisg looks spectacular on a dark night, as this is.
