Tuesday 19 April 2011: Bad Science

There were so many things to see in the garden after last night's light rain. Lots of shimmering spider webs and droplets hanging from colorful petals. Bags of snails to put in the trash. New flowers and lots of insects. I spent a long long time watching some mysterious life form fling itself from blade to blade as it made its way across the weeds; it was as thin as a white thread, maybe six inches long, and moved like a snake, coiling around stems and sinuously stretching from place to place. The front end would rise up and whip around til it found a target to connect with, and then the rest would follow in graceful curls. I watched until it became indistinguishable from the worn out grasses. I did try googling a few things (little snakes, larvae, nematodes), but frankly the photos of various possibilities made me gag. I choose to think it was a baby snake making its way back to the creek, and I'm not going barefoot in the backyard.
