Linseed flower

Today had rather a sad start. I was feeding the farmcats and noticed the mother cat who had just had some young three or four days ago had been attacked around the head and eyes and her kittens were gone from their nest. The sign of another fox raid. It was impossible to catch her and she was very distraught. I just hope if she recovers from the trauma we can do something about her injury.

Not being able to settle at anything I took myself off for a walk to go and see the Linseed we are growing this year. It is beginning to flower and when it is out I shall bore you with many photographs! The UK is the largest producer of Linseed in Europe and it is grown for its oil which has many applications, not forgetting Omega 3 and cattle cake and Linseed Oil itself. It is in fact a species of flax and this area of Somerset stretching down into parts of West Dorset grew a lot of flax over a hundred years ago for the manufacture of cord and sailcloth for the sailing ships of the Royal Navy and more recently for some of the racing yachts in the Americas Cup.
