Wednesday 27 April 2011: Bangor Cathedral
Simple, yet quite beautiful.
This cathedral dates its origin to the mid 500s, founded by a certain St Deiniol.
It has experienced a fair amount of violence in its time;
- burned by invading irishmen in the 630s,
- by Vikings in 1073,
- by King John in 1211
- and by an unknown arsonist in 1309.
Bangor apparently means a "wattle fenced enclosure".
