Strange Fruit

Fortunately no blood on the leaves or at the roots.

With massive apologies to Billie Holliday, or the version I prefer Nina Simone

I knew the song was about lynching and hanging of black people in the deep south of America, but I did not know it was a poem.

Strange Fruit
Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black body swinging in the Southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant South,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh!
Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the tree to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

(Abel Meeropol 1936)

Sorry for the heavy, sombre tone. This blip was meant to be a light hearted entry in to the weekly competition.

I have not entered the weekly them competition before. Just preferring to blip what I find, but as the challenge of blip is to improve my creativity and photography I thought I should try with this slightly leftfield interpretation of the theme. Apologies to Dozy Girl for displaying some of her jewellery, some of which she has had since aged 6 - I deliberately chose the gaudy pieces and hung them on a gaudy jewellery tree hanger.

In other news, I have had a small victory over the merchants of capitalism. 2 weeks ago I sighned up for a months trial of Lightroom 3. With 2 weeks remaining until I had to part with my hard earned, it informed me a small upgrade was available which I duly downloaded as prompted... this has re set my trial period for another 30 days Result.
