Fishing

Armed with local knowledge we kayaked across the other side of Kerikeri Inlet from Opito Bay to fish in surprisingly shallow water. We were a bit later getting there than intended but the locals were right, an hour after the tide started coming in it went off.

Here we have me steaming past a rocky island we decided against landing on. The dedicated fishermen of the hpx family approach fishing with scientific zeal. We've been well provided with various traces, lures and rods by big brother. Note the CD case with labelled traces, each one indicating the hook size and type. It saved a lot of messy tangles in the bottom of the fishing bag.

It wasn't cold as such but if I stand around in water and breeze for any length of time I get very cold. Hence the hat and keeping the spray skirt, paddle jacket and life jacket on.

We caught enough to be well fed for a couple of meals :-) (and yes I can gut and fillet fish and kill them very quickly and cleanly).

A splendid morning, good paddling (a bit choppy heading back into the wind), followed by coffee and cider on the deck.
