Roman Road near Coltishall in Norfolk

This is the Roman East-West Road that runs from Ermine Street at Durobrivae (near Peterborough) across the Fens and across Norfolk to the Great Estuary in East Norfolk, now loosely the area occupied by the Broads.

It took the produce of the villas of central Norfolk, and the Imperial Estate of the Fens to ports, and thence up the East Coast to South Shields and the supply base for Hadrian's Wall; or across the North Sea to the Roman Army on the Lower Rhine.

The course of the road is clearly visible here, east of the now closed RAF station at Coltishall. The road strides across the countryside just south of the low ridge line. There is a definite angular turn a few miles further east up to what would have been the still broad estuary of the Ant.
