Psychopsis Kalihi (kramerianum x papilio) 'Yellow Bird' alba
"The genus is native to Surinam, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Psychopsis are the world's longest flowering orchid, with flower spikes lasting 10 to 15 years, or more when properly cared for. This hybrid has a lot of vigor with strong wide leaves." Called Psychopsis after the lace-winged insects in the entomological genus of the same name. My plant has been in flower for three years. The gnarly stem you see behind the flower verifies the long progression of strangely insect-shaped flowers. This image is slightly larger than actual size. Though not white, it is an "alba" form because it lacks the chestnut coloring of the "normal" specimen.
