On this day six years ago

As every Mother's Day, we went for a big lunch at Grandma's. All of Grandma and Grandpa's three children with their spouses and children (including me) were there today. Grandgrandma was the only one missing.

On Mother's Day 2005 we accompanied Grandgrandma on her last journey to the graveyard, where she now lies with Grandgrandpa, whom I never met, because he died a year before I was born. It was Grandgrandma's wish to be buried on Mother's Day, and her wish was fulfilled as she fell asleep on April 16th and never woke up again. I never had a clue how she knew when her time would come. That's eerie.

Well, Grandgrandma had a great effect on us all. She was a Karelian evacuee, who saw the Second World War, lost her brothers in war, worked on the homefront, married a sergeant, lost her home, travelled to Western Finland and built a new life with her husband.

She was a hard-working woman, whose life was very rough and never too easy, but still she was a very warm and lovable personality, who always had the strength to inspire and encourage others. On Mother's Day we are remembering her.

Dedicated for my Grandgrandma, Grandma and Mom as a tribute to their important task as immigrant mothers

Ps. Of course we visited Granny (Dad's mother) today, too.
