Birthday Boys

Once upon a time the 12th May was quite an occasion in our house. It was on that date that the two sons in the family shared a birthday, though with a 10 year age gap it was not a question of a celebration of twins, but of siblings.

A cake was baked and the house decorated with birthday cards. Presents were opened, 'Happy Birthdays' were sung and the candles blown out before the family indulged in an orgy of cake eating.

These days have long gone. No cake has been baked, no cards festoon the shelves and the 'Happy Birthday' greetings have had to be said over the phone to the widely separated places of Elgin and Cairo.
The only celebratory occasion in the Dower House today has been the eating of the two muffins figuring in this blip. Delicious they were too, and probably much tastier than my baking efforts of yore.

No doubt there are cards, presents and cake waiting for them from wives and children in their new homes, but we are not party to that any longer.

Time moves on, things change and parents must move on too, but the sentiments are still the same -
Alasdair and David -A Very Happy Birthday!
