Enterprise

Imagine you own a small shop in an older Christchurch suburb called Sydenham.

In NZ we'd call it a Dairy; a place to buy milk, sweets, ice creams, the paper, a few lines of grocceries and if you're lucky, fresh fruit and veges.

Imagine your business is destroyed in an earthquake. In fact most of the buildings around you are destroyed or damaged.

The few remaining builidngs are either damaged and need repairing or they're modern, too big and out of your league. There is nothing else to rent.

What do you do?

This Indian family refused to give up. They've brought a shipping container and parked it where their shop used to be. All around is rubble, empty spaces, a few commercial businesses and just out of shot a couple of caravans where a few more determined souls live.

I love this. Occasionally I call by and purchasing the odd thing I don't need. I just admire their grit, determination and enterprise. Their refusal to give up and ability to adapt.
