Tuesday 24 May 2011: Under the Boardwalk

Just got home from the premier of Under the Boardwalk, a Ukulele Love Story, a wonderful local movie about the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz. We are, undisputedly, the ukulele capital of the world, with the club's membership fast approaching 2,000 people. Not all of us play simultaneously, thank goodness, but the monthly meetings at a local bar are packed with a couple hundred easy, and the weekly play-alongs on the beach draw nearly a hundred players, as well as an assortment of dogs, tourists, children, and dancers. We've marched in parades, played in festivals, and even have our own annual camping weekend called Burning Uke.

This has nothing at all to do with this drop-dead gorgeous poppy, but I couldn't get a good photo of the movie theater full of people waving their ukuleles and singing along with the title song.
