Monday 30 May 2011: Trouble At Mill
There are not many perks to being a volunteer at a National Trust property. And I can imagine that there is some rivalry to the plum jobs. Who gets to sit in the little, warm hut in the car park as opposed to who has to stand in the car park in the Bank Holiday rain and direct cars into the spaces?
If I were a volunteer I would want the job of driving the elongated courtesy golf buggy used to transport less able visitors around the place.
But this guy has the best job of all. He gets to use the loud hailer when it is time to clear the gardens. We spoke to the other chap on duty with him who was bemoaning the fact that this chap always grabs the megaphone first.
