Tuesday 7 June 2011: Out on a Limb
This is Caterpillar B. He was moving very quickly in this sequence, looking for the best place to anchor in order to begin the process of making a chrysalis. The energy with which he threw himself from branch to branch was admirable--he'd hold on with a few back feet and then fling his upper body in wide circles to try and connect with the next nearest stick. If there was nothing available he'd turn around and go back the way he'd come. I'm not sure what his criteria are for stopping, but he wore me out. No tripod, no live view, just desperate clicking and not many frames in focus. But a fascinating peek into caterpillar life nonetheless.
