Saturday 11 June 2011: Derby Day...
We were introduced to the film Whip It! by friends that live down near Newcastle. It is one of their favourite films and if you ever get a chance to see it, it's a very good coming of age type film. Anyway, Whip It is based around the sport of Roller Derby which MrsTFP has taken up and there was a big bout happening in Edinburgh which we were going to see. We invited them up to see it.
This bout was between Edinburgh's Twisted Thistles team and London's Brawl Saints. This is Metallikat* of the Brawl Saints hurtling round the the track to catch back up with the pack and hopefully pass them winning some points. She is playing the position of Jammer which you can tell from the star cover on her helmet.
A good match with some brutal action but unfortunately the home team was a fair bit outclassed.
*Real name unknown. Part of the Roller Derby culture is the taking on of stage names or derby names, by which you are referred.
