West Gateway, Lunna House

Headed up to Lunna Ness and stopped to admire the gateposts of Lunna House as I was intrigued by the steps set into both sides of the wall at either side of the gateway. I thought perhaps they were a rather precarious stile but it transpires that these are mounting blocks - presumably for a wide variety of height of horse. And whether there were 'ball finials' at one time, nowadays the finials are made of a suitably sized stone from the beach.
Lunna house itself is built on the site of a Viking longhouse incorporating that and stones from a nearby broch. The house was used as accommodation for crews of the Shetland Bus.
Assuming it was closed we didn't go into the Chapel, must save that for another time.

The intention was to visit a geological wonder, a 2000 tonne split glacial erratic, near the Loch of Stofast but, unsure of its location, we felt that crossing the boggy ground in the pouring rain was foolhardy so must save that for another time.

After a refreshment break in the hotel at Brae we returned to potter around the bays near the cottage.

Backblipped after return from holiday.
