Kinda Horrigans

Friday 24 June 2011: Stand out from the crowd...

483/365: ... or be a shrinking violet.

Guess which one Maddy opted for today?

So... there I was, having left work early to get back to Nottingham to see Maddy in her play. It was in the little amphitheatre bit of the school, outdoors on a nice gentle evening. Mellow to the max as with most stuff Steiner. And just as the children were about to go on, there was a small squawk of distress.

Hands up who knows which kid that was?

Yes! Mine! I am the proud mother of the girl who dissolved into tears and wouldn't go on. It's a role with which I am very familiar. At least they just kind of shepherded her off and no-one pressured her into joining in. She stood at the back, behind the audience, watching and sniffling. The kids in the play were ace. No forgotten bits. Totally in the moment. Very smile-worthy. And Maddy Moo? Well, she survived. Clang to my leg. Then Nick's leg. Then sucked her finger and looked glum.

After that, they lit a massive fire and then the kids all jumped over the embers. Yeah - I know... sounds weird, right? But, accompanied by a picnic and a bit of catching up with other families, it's all good.

Unlike Maddy, Felix, jumped over the fire twice. Ran around like a fool. Played, jumped, climbed, shouted, laughed. And is now walking around with four toilet rolls on his arms being a robot. Life is very much simpler for him than for her!

PS Have got marking to do for the rest of the weekend.
PPS I am going to borrow Maddy's glum face, I think!
PPPS People commented yesterday when I described Maddy's school crisis and asked if she was being bullied - she definitely isn't. She has a really supportive group of friends who come around her and comfort her when she's feeling sad... she just is one of those children. She'd just rather be at home than at school. No matter how nice school is (she even declared that she loved school this evening after her 'interesting' behaviour at the play this afternoon!)
