Alnmouth and the River Aln Estuary, Northumberland

I've always loved this view of beautiful Alnmouth, as viewed from the East Coast main line just before you reach Alnmouth Station. The village on the estuary looks just perfect on a sunny day.

Tip for travellers new to this line. If you are going up from the south, always take a window seat on the right-hand side; the reverse coming down from the north. This is because the views are completely one-sided, all the spectacular sights are on that side: Alnmouth, York Minster, Durham Cathedral, the white horse on the flank of the North York Moors, the sea around Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island, the Tyne bridges at Newcastle and the Angel of the North. There is practically nothing to copmpare with any of this on the other side until you reach Edinburgh.
