Porte de Soissons

Today we made a long walk along the town wall. This is one of the gates of the old city of Laon. The gate, built from 1217-1236 under Philippe-Auguste, defended the towns southern entrance. This is where the old royal road to Paris ran. Part of the gate collapsed in 1895. All that remains is the external facade and traces of the two beautiful guard rooms with ogival vaulted ceiling above the entrance ...

Thank you for all comments. I could read them yesterday evening and even managed to make one myself ... I'll keep on trying ... ;)
