Friday 11 April 2008: Seas and Swell
Swell in the Bay of Biscay is always massive, impressive and high. The difference between seas and swell is very simple. Seas are here because of the wind here and swell is here because of the wind there. Therefore, swell already traveled quite some distance before it arrived at our position this morning. That's why swell is longer, bigger and not so steep as seas. So, what we have right now is beautiful weather and still a rather moderate rolling and pitching Hermod. She is only rolling and pitching a few degrees where the Retriever and President Hubert are rolling up to 30 degrees, but nevertheless; because of the over sized dimensions of the Hermod it looks quite spectacular. You may ask yourself the question if you can call the Hermod a 'she'. He or She is so ugly that I prefer to call him a 'he'.
