That sinking feeling

I want to make a cake for Daisy's birthday party next week but given my limited baking experience I thought I'd better have a trial run. Here's the result and the hole in the middle says something's clearly gone wrong!

Maybe once the icing is on it will be presentable - and edible! And hopefully next week's effort will be closer to perfection otherwise an emergency dash to the supermarket will be required.
