Harburn Hobbies

Well this really is the ultimate of the #leithwalkshops. According to the owner (not the man in the picture, but another man who followed him out), the shop has been in its present place since 1978, and before that was at the bottom of the Walk, in turn following on from a shop first established in the 1930s. The website indeed claims that this is Scotland's oldest 'hobby' shop. Its one of the few that can stand comparison with Valvona and Crolla, pictured here earlier in this same series.

Meanwhile, all around have changed. Gone are the gentlemen's outfitters and grocers of yore. In their place are hairdressers, mobile phone shops and the "modern grocer", generally run by members of Edinburgh's thriving multi-ethnic communities.

But for the moment, let's rest with tradition and the old fashioned excitement about model railways and such like, catered for by Harburn Hobbies.
