Loon Up Close!

This is a common loon in Maine, with tiny water drops streaking its face, as is typical. Viewed large, you can see its transparent eyelid part way down--it helps loons see underwater (they feed almost entirely on fish).

The family of two parents and a chick was nowhere to be seen, but three other adults were again around intermittently (this is one of them--I'd drifted closer than I wanted). It's conceivable that the family is somehow hiding when the other adults are around, because they can reportedly sometimes be aggressive toward young chicks.

This is our final day of our visit to the pond (for more, see the previous four blips).
