Saturday 16 July 2011: Fiesta, Nerja

The feast of Nuestra Senora del Carmen , one of the special saints for fishermen, is held on or around the 16th of July in a variety of places in Spain. The event in Nerja included parading the statue from the Church dedicated to the Senora in the middle of the town, then taking it by boat around the bay before landing it below the Balcom de Europa , from whence it was carried back to the church by a group of uniformed sailors. We managed to find a good spot on the Balcon to watch the whole thing, including the fireworks and the final lift. Then we were able to walk a short distance to the final route into the church, when the statute was led by a brass band and followed by large crowds.
